AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Vapor IO, creators of the Kinetic Edge and the leading provider of tower-connected edge colocation services, today announced it has joined The Linux Foundation’s LF Edge project as one of the founding members. LF Edge is an umbrella organization to establish an open, interoperable framework for edge computing independent of hardware, silicon, cloud, or operating system.

“The Linux Foundation, with its proven open source governance model, will help accelerate edge computing by standardizing, and pushing forward, open source efforts,” said Cole Crawford, founder and CEO of Vapor IO. “The formation of LF Edge and its framework of standards will help organizations build edge applications more quickly and with more interoperability. We’re thrilled to join as a founding member.”

“LF Edge advances the IoT and edge computing landscape with a set of open source development tools for industrial, enterprise, smart home and consumer use cases that span multiple edges and domains,” said Arpit Joshipura, general manager, the Linux Foundation. “We are thankful for Vapor IO for contributing Open Glossary of Edge Computing to the new umbrella organization and continuing to lead the industry in establishing a standard language for everything that touches edge computing.”

Vapor IO is building the nation’s largest edge colocation and interconnection platform, targeting the top twenty US metropolitan markets. Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge embeds edge computing deep into the wireless cellular network and is the fastest-growing platform of tower-connected edge data centers. Vapor IO delivers a new category of colocation which moves the intersection of the wireless and wireline networks much closer to the end user.

The Open Glossary of Edge Computing

As part of LF Edge, Vapor IO will continue to advance the Open Glossary of Edge Computing, an open source project that became part of The Linux Foundation in June of 2018. Vapor IO and Packet, the leading bare metal cloud for developers, built the original glossary as part of the State of the Edge project. Now part of The Linux Foundation, the Open Glossary is managed in a GitHub repo and freely licensed under the terms of a Creative Commons CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. Built similarly to Wikipedia, the Open Glossary of Edge Computing is a freely-licensed glossary, written collaboratively by the people who use it. As of today, the Open Glossary project will be an official project of LF Edge, and will continue its mission to provide a standardized glossary of terms related to the field of edge computing.
