Vapor IO Launches Kinetic Edge Exchange, the World’s First Edge Exchange

Digital Realty and Vapor IO form alliance to offer an Edge-to-Core continuum in multiple US cities, starting with Chicago and Atlanta

AUSTIN – October 30, 2019 – Vapor IO, creators of the Kinetic Edge™ platform and the leading provider of edge colocation, edge interconnection and edge networking services, today announced the Kinetic Edge Exchange (KEX), the world’s first software-defined system for interconnection in edge locations. The KEX allows network operators, application developers, content providers and other Kinetic Edge users to cross-connect in edge meet-me rooms, making it easy and cost-effective to peer and exchange data in close proximity to the last mile wireless and wireline networks. Vapor IO’s KEX will first be deployed in Chicago and Atlanta with Digital Realty, a leading global provider of data center, colocation and interconnection solutions.

The Third Act of the Internet

The Kinetic Edge and the KEX are the centerpieces of the internet’s third act. Originally, the internet was built as a global “network of networks”. This was the first act, and during the 2000s this model gave way to the increasing regionalization of the internet through CDNs and localized infrastructure. Today, that second act is concluding and the third act is emerging as the need for low latency, reduced backhaul network loading and overall higher performance requirements are driving a new, highly local tier of internet infrastructure enabled by edge data centers at the very edge of the last mile network.

An example application which benefits from the KEX is the use of autonomous drones for public safety. Autonomous drones need very low-latency connectivity back to an array of cloud services, all of which can be present at the Kinetic Edge. These drones can also generate large volumes of traffic, such as 4K streaming video. With the KEX, the exchange services needed to support these emerging use cases occur at the edge of the last mile network, all at a fraction of the latency and backhaul cost of traditional, non-edge based approaches to traffic exchange. 

Core-to-Edge with Digital Realty

Digital Realty and Vapor IO have formed an alliance to deploy Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge Exchange in Digital Realty’s centers of data exchange campuses. These campuses are an ideal meeting place to extend connections to the edge, making possible new distributed workflows spanning from core to edge to scale digital business.

This unified solution implements the Kinetic Edge SDN fabric to connect and coordinate traffic exchange between the Digital Realty campus and Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge deployments. As a result, endpoint workloads computed at the Kinetic Edge are passed to the Digital Realty Campus to connect to upstream workflow processing, data analysis and retention.

How the KEX Works

Moving data on the internet requires many networks to cross-connect and exchange traffic. Traffic exchanges are where networks come together and trade data, often through a business relationship called “peering.” By making it easy to exchange data, application developers, content providers and network operators can optimize routes and deliver better, more predictable user experiences. 

Tenants of Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge colocation platform can interconnect with one another using virtual and physical Meet-Me Room (MMR) capabilities provided by the Kinetic Edge Exchange. The Kinetic Edge Fabric that underlies the KEX provides a software-defined network that makes it easy for Vapor IO partners and customers to establish peering or other traffic exchange relationships with each other. All of the virtual cross connects can be controlled via software, which allows users to rapidly adapt to changing business requirements using automation.

The Linux Foundation Appoints Cole Crawford to the LF Edge Governing Board

Founder and CEO of Vapor IO joins The LF Edge Governing Board, helping to accelerate edge computing through standardizing around open source efforts

LF Edge is an umbrella organization within The Linux Foundation working to establish open, interoperable frameworks for edge computing independent of hardware, silicon, cloud or operating system.

Vapor IO and Crown Castle Bring Amazon Web Services to the Kinetic Edge via AWS Direct Connect

Technology integration and direct fiber will unlock new classes of applications that span core to edge

AUSTIN, Texas – April 24, 2019 –  Vapor IO and Crown Castle today announced a jointly developed service that seamlessly interconnects Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge with Amazon Web Services (AWS) via Crown Castle’s high-speed Cloud Connect. This unique product enables a new class of mobile and wireless edge applications that span the continuum from edge to core. Starting today, customers at Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge can build edge applications that interconnect with AWS over an operator-grade fiber optic network. Built atop AWS Direct Connect, this collaborative offering unlocks a powerful class of edge applications that split workloads and data between the mobile edge and centralized locations, delivering a seamless end-to-end experience.

“By directly connecting AWS services to applications at the Kinetic Edge, we’re bringing the full power of the cloud to the last mile wireless network, delivering the foundation of a true edge-to-core architecture for developers,” said Cole Crawford, founder and CEO of Vapor IO. “We are aggressively rolling out the Kinetic Edge across a national footprint that will reach over 20 markets by the end of 2020 with a planned deployment of over 80 additional markets. By incorporating AWS Direct Connect into our last mile network, we enable seamless cloud integration for edge applications.”

Customers of Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge can build applications on AWS that directly interact with Vapor IO’s tower-connected data centers at the edge of the cellular wireless network, via Crown Castle’s dedicated high-speed fiber link. This will allow developers to build wireless and mobile edge applications that can reduce network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and rely on a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connections.

AWS at the Kinetic Edge

Developers building applications at the Kinetic Edge will have access to the full suite of AWS cloud computing services including Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute (Amazon EC2), Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) and Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS). These capabilities leverage Crown Castle’s Cloud Connect service, which enables customers to provision one or more 50Mbps to 500Mbps capacity AWS Direct Connect Hosted Connections between the Kinetic Edge and AWS.   

Crown Castle offers one of the largest fiber footprints in the country and has been an early pioneer in edge infrastructure, providing the fiber backbone that supports much of Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge, including backhaul to key internet exchange points (IXPs). By offering Cloud Connect capabilities to the Kinetic Edge, customers can develop cloud-based mobile applications on AWS that support edge workloads via a direct connection that can lower costs while also delivering increased reliability and throughput.

“Over the past two years, we’ve been working very closely with Vapor IO to build out their Kinetic Edge using our real estate and fiber assets in many US cities,” said Phil Olivero, VP Technology, Crown Castle. “Chicago, the world’s first Kinetic Edge city, proved to be the ideal location for us to connect the Kinetic Edge directly to AWS. As Vapor IO rolls out the Kinetic Edge to new cities, we plan to extend our Cloud Connect to also connect to AWS in those locations. This will empower our mutual customers to build high-performance edge-enabled mobile applications using AWS.”

An Example: Speeding up Mobile Gaming

AWS customer Network Next will use Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge and Crown Castle’s Cloud Connect to run mobile edge workloads that deliver improved performance for multiplayer mobile games built to run on AWS. Network Next leverages bare metal servers on the Kinetic Edge, provided by Kinetic Edge Alliance partner Packet, in order to run highly specialized packet processors that leverage AWS Direct Connect to enhance gaming performance.

“Our customers run a massive number of game servers on AWS and we work with them to improve performance for mobile clients via the Kinetic Edge,” said Glenn Fiedler, CEO of Network Next. “As gaming companies increasingly look to bring high-speed multiplayer games like Fortnite to mobile platforms, our sophisticated edge processing connects players back to AWS in the most optimal fashion, giving a true edge-to-core experience.”

Availability

Crown Castle’s Cloud Connect solution is already available today in 14 AWS Direct Connect locations in AWS US-East and US-West Regions, supporting over 32,000 locations included in Crown Castle’s fiber network. Crown Castle’s solution will also be available in most Kinetic Edge locations starting with Chicago, IL, which is generally available today. Vapor IO plans to deploy the Kinetic Edge to over 100 US cities with the first six deploying now. These six are: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Seattle.

In further support of the Kinetic Edge Alliance, Packet today also announced a first-of-its-kind Edge Access Program providing both commercial and open source users with free access to bare metal edge computing servers in Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge locations, making it possible to build and trial edge applications quickly and economically.

  • Edens Hub (ORD2) — With 150 kW of active capacity and expansion potential up to 300 kW, the Edens Hub Kinetic Edge site brings significant edge data center capacity to the area near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Positioned at a tower-connected site, the Edens Hub provides the same automation, security and interconnection benefits as other Kinetic Edge sites.

Packet’s Edge Access Program

Packet’s Edge Access Program provides both commercial and open source users with free access to edge cloud infrastructure and expertise. The program will function on a rolling basis and feature bare metal configurations targeted at both cloud native and telco deployments. Customized infrastructure can be deployed on a case-per-case basis.
